What is biodiesel?

For starters, let's look at what biodiesel really is. In its simplest form, biodiesel is made from any vegetable oil, animal fat, or mixture of both. It is a clean burning fuel that is made from renewable resources, hence the name of biodiesel.

In general, biodiesel is a fuel made from straight vegetable oil, sometimes called the SVO. So if you want to make your own biodiesel fuel, you must have an adequate supply of the basic ingredients. Unfortunately, most households do not produce enough animal fat or vegetable fat residues come anywhere close to the manufacturing biodiesel fuel sufficient to maintain the family car running.

Using recycled oil

This has given rise to a whole new industry, with the basic objective of supplying much larger amounts of raw material. They meet with restaurants, bakeries and other businesses that use a fryer, so they can collect used oil for recycling. The oils are then combined and used as a basis for biodiesel. The processes are the same that is used to produce biodiesel fuel the country, but by having access to a much greater supply of raw materials, these companies can produce biodiesel in quantities that are more viable.

Can I make at home?

One thing to remember is that it is so so simple! Used vegetable oil must be mixed and stored, that can be a big problem if you have large amounts it. It is also necessary to dehydrate, filter and deacidify used oil before it can be used to make biodiesel. This makes biodiesel fuel production at home a lot more complicated.

That said, certainly still quite possible to make biodiesel fuel at home, simply by buying oil straight vegetable, instead of using waste products. Although it will cost much more, when compared to the cost of buying the necessary amount of gas to run his car for a year, you can still save an enormous amount – somewhere around 75 percent. Even better, you are saving the environment too.

Can I mix with oil?

The short answer is yes! Can be mixed with diesel in any proportion and used as fuel. There is a fuel called B20 which is 20 percent biodiesel that has shown significant environmental benefits. Can be used in existing diesel engines with either little or no modification. The only thing to consider is that biodiesel acts as a solvent and can remove old deposits on the walls of your fuel tank and fuel lines. This can lead to blockage of the filter so that it should take. But hey – then you have a clean system!
